A brand system should survive Instagram.

If the identity disappears the moment content starts, it was never a system.

Udeat field note

If the identity disappears the moment content starts, it was never a system.

The launch-deck problem

A lot of identities look complete because the presentation contains beautifully art-directed mockups. Then the brand launches and every post becomes a new invention.

A system needs recurring decisions

What is always large? What is allowed to move? What kind of photograph belongs? How does copy sit on an image? What happens when the subject is boring? These are identity questions too.

Consistency is not repetition

The answer is not twenty rigid templates. A useful system creates recognisable relationships while leaving enough room for content to have a life.

The useful question is rarely “what style should this be?” It is “what is this actually trying to make someone notice?”
